Derivational Morphology of Czech on Large Corpus Data

Subject of this thesis is study of word formation in the Czech language. The main aim is to create a module acquiring derivations from data of the electronic Dictionary of the Czech Language. This problematics has been solved by constructing three-level processing based on dictionary data. The first level is to obtain derivations from lemma definitions, the second step is making groups of basic forms according to their similarities, and the third stage is the evaluation of derivation pairs by number tag of derivation class to which they belong. I have managed to get more than 4 500 new words and evaluate over 20 000 derivative couples. The module has become a full-fledged part of the Morphological Analyzer of the Knowledge Technology Research Group, working at the Faculty of Information Technology of the Brno University of Technology.

Adjectival networks. On the grammar of French denominal adjectives

in English This dissertation studies su xal derivation of adjectives from nouns in French. It is based on a lexicon of about 15, 000 adjectives, 40% of which may be considered deno- minal. I rst present the data under investigation. I describe the Dénom database, which was derived from large scale lexica. In order to assess the position of denominal adjectives in the more general adjectival system, I present a classi cation of French adjectives on the basis of their morphological properties. In the process, I spot cases where the fringes of the class of denominals are unclear, and question the distributional and semantic co- hesion of the class. I nally review di erent types of formal or semantic mismatches between the adjective and its base noun. In a second step, I present a study of the formal and semantic properties of a subset of denominal adjectives where the morphological relation between base and derivative is regular. This subset is selected on the basis of the type frequency of formal patterns of alternation between base and derivative. I describe the phonological and morpholo- gical properties of base nouns, with the aim of uncovering factors that play a role in the formation of adjectives. Appreciatve suffixation in spanish and strategy of its translation

The bachelor thesis describes possible translations of some diminutives and augmentatives and compares the frequency of the use of these translations on the basis of their occurance in The Czech national corpus. There are theoretically explained the ways of enriching vocabulary, yet the biggest part is dedicated to appreciative suffixation in czech and spanish language, to ways of formation of diminutives and augmentatives and the strategy of their translations. In every chapter there are mentioned the most common czech and spanish apreciative suffixes and also the description of modifications of the derived words. There are also available graphs which show the frequency of the use of different translations which appear in corpus.

Word-formation specificities of Bohemian minor place-names

The article, based on the theory of parasystemic word-formation, summarises some results of the research on the word-formation aspect of the names of unsettled geographic objects in Bohemia. The examples of parasystemic word-formation analysed in the paper include both suffixation and composition. The analysed suffixes are devided into three groups: (1) suffixes not occurring in common nouns, (2) suffixes whose function in toponyms is different from their usual function(s) in common nouns, (3) suffixes used exclusively for the formation of expressive nouns in the common-noun sphere. The shorter section dedicated to composition concentrates on one special type of compound adjectives which is typical of the proper-noun sphere of the Czech language.

Diminutive suffixes

This thesis deals with the process of diminutive alteration in Italian language. The alteration is the process which creates diminutives mainly from nouns, but also from another parts of speech. It is a highly productive tool for word formation in Italian and in Czech language too. The thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical one. In the first part, the term of diminutive alteration is defined, using the specialized literature, and the process of formation of diminutives in Italian is also described in this part. One part compares the formation of diminutives in Italian and in Czech language. The second part deals with the analysis of a sample of Italian diminutives. The analysis concentrates on the productivity of suffixes, on a characterization of basis and their combination. There is a description of the behaviour of the suffixes and there are introduced the examples of use of the diminutives and their meaning. The aim of the thesis is to find characteristic qualities and behaviour of the diminutive suffixes and to describe the process of alteration.
